Worship & Music

Worship is central to our life together as Christians, our thankful response of praise to our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer.

The Word of God as found in the Bible is central to worship at First Presbyterian Church. It also is firmly grounded in Reformed theology and practice.

In addition to services every Sunday, we hold special worship services on Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, weekly during Lent, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. Some of these services are held jointly with other congregations in the area, both Presbyterian and other denominations.

This service meets in the Sanctuary.

If you are looking for a place to encounter God's Spirit, we hope you will join us for worship—a time to feed your soul, connect with other Christians and equip yourself to serve Almighty God.

A key ingredient to worshiping God is the music experience.  First Presbyterian Church is blessed with many talented musicians, both vocal and instrumental.  Currently, the choirs for children and adults, along with a handbell choir (open to teens and adults) have been suspended due to Covid-19, but hopefully will resume soon.  The church's music programs enables the congregation to offer God our highest praise. In all aspects of our worship, we seek to give glory to God and to live and serve as followers of Jesus Christ in the world.

In the event of inclement weather affecting scheduled services and events, the Pastor will confer with the Facilities and Worship committee moderators and make a decision about whether to cancel.

If services or events are cancelled or postponed, the information will be posted on the Facebook page, an email sent to the Steeple Views Weekly subscribers, and carried on the Roanoke TV stations WDBJ-7 and WSLS-10.

Flowers enhance the beauty of our Sanctuary and bring glory to God during worship services. They are a lovely way to memorialize or honor a loved one, as well.

There are two ways to contribute flowers: You may supply fresh flowers (cut or potted), either from a florist or your garden, or you may make a monetary donation to any mission or fund of the church and use one of the church's silk flower arrangements. An announcement of your donation and honoree will be printed in the bulletin for the service.

Contact the church office to sign up for a date.

The Communion Guild is made up of teams that prepare the communion elements, clean up afterwards, and maintain the Sacristy and communionware. We are always looking for help with this ministry. Please contact the church office if you are interested.

Our pastor frequently uses texts from the Revised Common Lectionary in the worship services. These passages may be found here:
