What is a Presbyterian?
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), with denominational offices in Louisville, Kentucky, has approximately 2.3 million members, more than 10,000 congregations and 14,000 ordained and active ministers. Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him.
Our denomination has affirmed Six Great Ends, or our six goals as a church. These Six Great Ends are: 1. The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind. 2. The shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God. 3. The maintenance of divine worship. 4. The preservation of the truth. 5. The promotion of social righteousness. 6. And the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.
